Hlfallout.net point to a report by an anonymous industry insider who says the release date for Half-life 2 is not a matter of Vivendi sitting on a finished game, but rather it is dependent on fixing bugs. They're being very careful about getting a stable release out the door and with all the big reviews hitting the net I'm not surprised. It's looking to be something very special. The delays are not Vivendi sitting on a finished game or Valve not playing fair.
The post is by an "anonymous insider" and so should be taken with a pinch of salt, but if true it gives insight into the status of the release. The first release candidate was sent to the publisher on 15 Sept, but reports stated that Vivendi had the option of with-holding the release for six months - even if the game was complete.
Recent articles on Gamespot about court disputes between Valve and Vivendi painted a picture of the two companies at each others throats, with Vivendi even going so far as to claim the rights to the Half-Life intellectual property.
