In a huge blow to Sony, a district court in California has ordered them to pay $90.7 million dollars to Immersion, a small company in Silicon Valley specialising in digital touch technology.Immersion claimed the famous Dual-Shock controller, that comes as standard with the PlayStation and PS2 and shakes in response to actions in-game, infringes on a patent held by the firm.
The court order also requires Sony to suspend sales of the PlayStation in the U.S; but that order doesn't hold while Sony appeal the decision.
Immersion CEO Victor Viegas:
The compulsory license during the stay of the injunction creates a binding obligation for Sony to compensate us for the continued use of our technology in their PlayStation products. We have always believed, and continue to believe, in the strength of our intellectual property. We remain confident of our position in the appeals process.
