I came across this wacky and interesting article about a futurologist in the U.K. who predicts, among other things, that humans will be able to achieve immortality by the year 2050 by downloading their consciousnesses to computers.
The scientist, Ian Pearson, notes that 45 years in IT is a very long time, and also predicts that by the year 2020 a conscious computer will have been created that will be used in aeroplanes - the idea being that the plane should be more afraid of crashing than the passengers.
To illustrate his immortality-through-computers prediction, he refers to the advances seen with the Playstation 3:
It is 35 times more powerful than previous games consoles. 'The new PlayStation is 1 per cent as powerful as a human brain,' he said. 'It is into supercomputer status compared to 10 years ago. PlayStation 5 will probably be as powerful as the human brain.'
