Next-gen consoles to assassinate pc gaming forever - 6.6.05

CNET has an interesting article in which they put forth claims that Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 will be the final nail the the PC game's coffin. They argue that as the new consoles emerge, PC gamers will be more likely to want to shell out the cash for the entire console instead of the same amount for a new graphics card in their PC.

They claim that the PC games market is already dwindling and that it cannot take another blow like this, as developers will be forced to make games for the ever-growing console market if they want to have any sizeable profits.

What I am willing to predict, however, even at this early stage, is that the real loser in all of this will be PC gaming. Let's start with Quake 4, which uses the "old" Doom 3 engine but still came across as one of the more impressive PC titles I saw at the show. Id, Quake 4's developer, was also showing an Xbox 360 version of the same game behind closed doors, and those reporters I polled at the show confirmed what I thought: they really couldn't discern any difference between the two versions.
