A dispute between Sony and a small Internet retailer has revealed an interesting tidbit of information - Sony has not secured the European trademarks to the names PSP, UMD or XMB (a component of the operating system that appears on all PSP packaging).Sony have served a cease & desist order to Electricbirdland.com for unofficially importing PSP's from Japan and the U.S. for sale in the U.K., months before the device's official European launch on 1 September.
The press release giving information on the dispute speculates that the trademark issue could cause further delays in the European release of the PSP, or may even see the release of the device under another name in that territory:
Sony's failure to secure these trademarks could potentially lead to further delays to the European launch of the PSP, or could result in the costly re-branding of a product which has already proved to be a hit in the US and Japan.
