In a not so surprising turn of events, Microsoft's Bill Gates has hinted that future versions of the upcoming Xbox 360 may include a drive that supports HD-DVD. This announcement comes after talks between Toshiba and Sony on deciding a future DVD format came to a collapse. Sony will be pushing forward Blue-Ray disks, which support up to 50 Gb of storage with their Playstation 3, while Toshiba try to present HD-DVD to the world, holding only 30 Gb of storage but ultimately costing less to manufacture.We knew the next-gen console wars were going to be pretty vicious, but now it appears the next-gen DVD format wars will be equally as bloody after Gates suggested backing Toshiba's HD-DVD.
The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today's DVD format," said Gates at the conference. "We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD-DVD player or something else.
