Beijing clinic treats online addicts - 4.7.05

Online AddictIn a world where online gaming is rampant, where both children and adults alike seem to be growing more and more fond of the virtual worlds online, it comes as little surprise that online addiction centers appear to be the new wave of protection to get MMORPG junkies and the likes to spend less time away from the PC, or in some cases just to spend time away from online gaming, period.

"I'm 12 years old," one boy announces with a smile. "I love playing computer games. That's it."

"It's been good to sleep" says another, a 17-year-old with spiky hair, now that he's no longer on the computer all day.

Some patients at China's first officially licensed clinic for Internet addiction.

According to recent government figures, China has the second-largest online population in the world, topping 94 million users.

All the children here have left school because they are playing games or in chat rooms everyday," says the clinic's director, Dr. Tao Ran. "They are suffering from depression, nervousness, fear and unwillingness to interact with others, panic and agitation. They also have sleep disorders, the shakes and numbness in their hands.
