GameCloud has a nice write-up examining the current state of the gaming industry, particularly after Wednesday's decision by the ESRB to brand the highly popular Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with an AO (Adults only) rating. You can find reaction from games developers on the issue, including id CEO Todd Hollenshead:
I preface my comments by saying all I know is what I've read about the situation. I don't own and haven't played GTA: SA and haven't tried the so-called "hot coffee" mod or even seen it.
The ESRB has the power and the responsibility to rate games based on the content shipped with the game. Publishers and developers have a responsibility to be honest about that content so that games can be accurately rated based on their content. The problem in this particular situation is that a dispute apparently exists as to whether the "hot coffee" mod content was included with the game or whether it was added or enabled only with the use of unauthorized third party software and/or hardware.
