Gamespot have published a new in-depth preview of the upcoming PC/X360 shooter Prey, as well as a new batch of screenshots.
The game was initially begun way back in 1995 but was subsequently shelved while 3D Realms worked on Duke Nukem Forever, which still has not surfaced. At the E3, 2K Games and 3D Realms surprise-announced development on Prey had been restarted. The game is being developed by Human Head Studios with supervision provided by 3D Realms.
The new preview is a good intro to the story, and sheds some light on the features; for instance the character will be able to have out-of-body experiences that let him float ahead of his corporeal body and gain access to locked areas.
Another interesting angle taken in the game is the concept of "death-walking": rather than the boring standard of returning to your last save-point when the character dies, in Prey he has to fight his way back from the afterlife to the land of the living:
When death walking, Tommy takes on his spirit form on an otherworldly plateau in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by howling spirits that he must fend off with his longbow. Once he begins fighting spirits, he has only a limited amount of time before the earth beneath his feet swallows him up and drags him back into the world of the living (or in Tommy's case, the spaceship of the living). The more spirits he can kill off with his bow, the more health he'll recover before he returns.
