The people who brought you Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory are now at work on their next project, which will see their game upgraded with the Doom 3 Engine. Wedgewood's old mod was based around the aging Quake 3 Engine used in Wolfenstein 3D but the new port will get the fresh id treatment. The game will have the look and feel of Doom 3 with a few differences. Instead of roaming down dark and dank corridors, there will be several outdoor elements to the game, with environments not limited to the inside. Also some new technology developed by id's John Carmack will allow developers to create environments that render levels and terrain all the way out to the horizon, where before games usually covered up the limited ability and draw distance with fog or forcing the game to absorb some parts of the terrain.
According to the developers, the new technology, called 'Magetexture' will also let them assign different physical properties to certain types of surfaces in the game. Like giving one surface the property of asphalt might allow for better traction with land vehicles but would also be more noisy to walk on.
Apparently, since the game takes place on earth, prior the first invasion conflict that preceded the events in 1997's Quake II (in which players took on the role of a lone soldier to hunt down the invading Stroggs' leader), the game will take place in varied environments on the planet; not just the desert region shown in the E3 demo movie, but also possibly temperate and jungle zones.
