Sony Dismiss Nintendo DS as a "Gimmick" - 29.8.05

PlayStation Portable Nintendo DSIt looks like Ken Kutaragi and his trashtalkin' ways might have earned him a fan within the leadership of Sony.
The Sony chief has used every possible opportunity to disparage the rival Xbox 360, and it appears Sony's vice president of studios Phil Harrison has been listening carefully and taking notes.
Harrison used a recent interview to talk up the PSP ahead of its European launch on the 1st of September, while at the same time saving some harsh words for the Nintendo DS.

The interview kicks off with Harrison sniffing that handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an "irrelevance", which is a bit strange considering Nintendo is the 800-pound gorilla of the handheld market. He then goes on to dismiss the DS touchscreen as merely a "gimmick", that has probably imperiled the long-term success of the DS.

Harrison didn't stop there either, saving a little bile for the Nintendo DS audience:

“Nintendo knows its target audience, because it has really narrowed that down; and it’s pretty much defined by a boy or girl’s ability to admire Pokémon.

“With the DS, it’s fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen,” Harrison continued. “But I fear that it won’t have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick – so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that.”
