Less than six weeks after Blizzard announced World of Warcraft had hit 3.5 million worldwide subscribers, the userbase has jumped again and now boasts a staggering 4 million players. The game has reached 1 million paying subscribers in North America for the first time, less than a year after it was first released in November of last year.
While impressive, the U.S. figure pales in comparison to the runaway success the game has had in China; in one hour, 100,000 players had joined the game's initial beta test in that country, and one month after its official release there, it had reached a cool 1.5 million players.
Not shy about their success, Blizzard have now proclaimed WoW to be the largest MMORPG in the world:
This brings the total population for Blizzard's critically acclaimed game, the largest MMORPG in the world, to more than four million paying customers.
"It's very rewarding to see so many new and returning players logging in to play World of Warcraft daily," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "With the continued support of our retail partners, World of Warcraft has reached more than one million paying customers in North America well before its one-year anniversary in November. We would like to express our appreciation to both the players and our retail and license partners for helping us make World of Warcraft one of the most popular online games in the world."
