A group of Florida Legislators are trying to jump on the game banning bandwagon. They want to make it illegal to sell or rent games rated for violence or mature content to children under the age of 18.
Following in the footsteps of other states, such as California, and a proposed law put up by U.S. Senators Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman, the Florida proposal would include a 60-day jail sentence and a $500 fine for those who sell or rent games marked as mature to minors.
While laws of this nature seem futile, as evidenced by a judge’s ruling that California’s proposal was unconstitutional, lawmakers across the country continue to try and pass them anyway. Maybe it’s easier for them to waste time in an attempt to baby sit America’s youth than it is for them to come up with ways to pull the pork out of local, state and federal budgets or, god forbid, address issues such as violent crime and punishment, Social Security reform or ethics violations within their own ranks?
Maybe they continue to try and fight the losing battle simply to appease constituents who would rather let government raise their children than have to do the dirty work of saying no themselves? Or maybe, just maybe these folks actually think it’s possible to legislate morality effectively?
On the upside, Florida Governor Jeb Bush opposed the idea of the ban, saying parents, not lawmakers, should regulate what kids watch.
A politician with common sense? It can’t be!
