Is 5 Million Too Many For World of Warcraft? - 11.1.06

World of Warcraft
As Blizzard Entertainment basks in the glory of hitting the 5-million player mark for its MMORPG World of Warcraft, players are beginning to complain, and complain loud about logjams getting into the system.

With long waits just to get into the game and problems with server crashes, players are beginning to wonder if WoW has grown too big for its britches.

According to TGDaily.Com, players have had to wait up to 30 minutes just to get into the game. Just like the old-fashion queue system from AOL’s antiquated version of NeverWinter Nights, players in WoW must wait their turn to play their toons and even then there's no guarantee the server will stay up for a good night's worth of gaming.

Blizzard Entertainment so far has not said what exactly is causing these problems. Sources however indicated that a rush of new accounts from the holiday season and newly added content, which requires players to gather massive amounts of materials for an upcoming virtual war, may have overwhelmed the game developer.

Up until a few months ago, players were able to almost instantly log into the game after typing in their username and password. Now many players have to wait from a few minutes to up to 30 minutes to log in. In addition to showing the estimated time till entry, WoW's waiting screen shows the player's place in the queue and players on the Medivh server have recently seen queues of more than 500 players deep.”
