WoW Hits 1 Million Mark In Europe - 20.1.06

World of Warcraft
The news about possible discrimination against Chinese players, issues with server stability and long entry queues has barely cooled. But that hasn’t stopped Blizzard from making the big announcement that its World of Warcraft has topped 1 million subscribers in Europe.

This, according to some sources, brings WoW up to well over the 5 million players worldwide it recently announced.

WoW was released in November 2004 on both the PC and Mac platforms, roughly about the time Sony released its EverQuest II. Although WoW’s numbers are impressive, fans of the MMORPG have been complaining in recent weeks about a number of game-related problems, including entry queues that have topped 500 players.

News broke earlier this week about Chinese players possibly being discriminated against. It seems players of the game are trying to exclude them from groups, fearing they are only out for money. Blizzard recently banned 1,000 accounts for “gold farming,” although it did not reveal the countries of origin for those players.

While it seems there are no MMORPGs without their issues, one can’t help but wonder if Blizzard is allowing quality to overcome quality.
