In perhaps the closest thing gamers have gotten to an “official source,” Sony exec Howard Stringer slipped up by saying the next-gen PS3 console will roll out "by year end."
Sony had earlier targeted a Spring release. But, issues with manufacturing have allowed the rumor mill to go into full grind, ping-ponging the release from its initial Spring, to the 2006 Holiday season, to 2007 and back again.
In an interview with Variety magazine, Stringer, the company’s chairman-CEO, eluded to a holiday time release, but keep in mind he didn’t give an exact date, or even season, so speculation will likely continue.
Sony will roll out the PS3 by year end, in time for the holidays. If PS3 delivers what everyone thinks it will, the game is up,” Stringer boasts.
The news is likely to mean that it is doubtful that the company’s next generation console will be coming to the UK before 2007 if as suggested the company plans a Christmas 2006 US launch.

Even though Sony is still staying rather tight-lipped in regard to an actual release date, the news is likely good for Microsoft. Its November launch of the Xbox 360 was marred by shortages and console problems. The extra time before the PS3 hits stores will give it a chance to fully square away issues with its console.
