Amid a whirlwind of speculation, it looks like Sony is finally ready to talk about its upcoming release of the PlayStation 3.
Sony is expected to give a keynote address during the Game Developers Conference in San Jose later this month. It is hoped the March 22 speech titled “PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box” by Sony’s Phil Harrison will include some real information about the next-gen console, its abilities and hopefully its anticipated release date.
Heretofore Sony has been extremely chintzy with official word about the console, driving rumors and speculation to a tabloid journalism level where word, any word, about the machine makes headlines. Nameless “officials” have speaking on behalf of the console for weeks now and it would be very nice to have an “official” official comment or two on the record so gamers can operate with solid information to make their next-gen console choices.
Latest rumors and analyst reports have the console debuting sometime very late this year or early next year. Reported manufacturing issues seem to have pushed off the original Spring launch, giving the Xbox 360 a bit of breathing room as its manufacturer, Microsoft, tackles its own next-gen problems.
Also at the conference, Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata is expected to talk about his company’s future plans.
And as all of this sounds great, what I’d like to know is what gamers think about all the speculation? Has Sony’s tight-lipped stance hurt the console’s future? Or, has it helped drum up interest that will result in big sales down the road?
