Taking a page from other MMORPGs such as EQ, Blizzard has added weather effects to World of Warcraft with its version 1.10 patch.
The patch released earlier this week and caused a little down time, but players wanting more eye candy probably won’t complain too much.
Weather effects have long been employed by Sony’s EQ and EQII to add to the sense of realism. Rain, snow, fog and some incredible sky views, stars a-twinkling and all, have made the world of Norrath breathtaking for a long time. The move is a good one as players not only judge games by their content and playability, but also by their ability to “pull them in” to the fantasy. The more engrossing and realistic the images are, the better.
Released simultaneously for Mac OS X and Windows and maintained in lock-step since then, World of Warcraft is enormously popular, garnering millions of players worldwide. As an MMORPG, there’s no single-player portion of World of Warcraft — all play takes place online, on servers operated by Blizzard. The game’s been a popular diversion for Mac users, which Blizzard does an effective job of catering to — the company has already released a “Universal Binary” patch for Intel-based Macs, for example.
The 1.10 update gains half a dozen Mac-specific improvements, including bug fixes for improper sky rendering, improvements to the Mac sound engine, and other bug fixes.
