Nintendo Revolution Launch Report - 9.4.06

Nintendo Revolution
Nintendo’s Revolution may be the underdog in the next-gen game, but if what George Harrison is telling Game Informer is correct, the everyman’s console may win out in the end.

Harrison, Nintendo’s senior VP for marking and corporate communications at Nintendo of America, says the Revolution is likely to launch with about 20 titles. The console is expected to cost less than the Xbox 360 (which by default would make it cheaper than the PS3) and titles should cost about $50 versus the $60 for 360 games. The title pricing may be only for Nintendo-produced games though.

Harrison admits that Nintendo has learned many lessons from the success of the PlayStation 2. They now understand that the system with the greatest variety of software does not need technical superiority. They have also learned that it's important to keep software flowing throughout the first year on the market, as opposed to what happened with GameCube and DS (big launches and then several months with few or no games released). The marketing challenges for Revolution are similar to the challenges Nintendo faced when marketing the Virtual Boy in the 90s.

The combination of lower pricing and more titles could in fact help edge the Nintendo over the competition. Although it’s true price reports out for the PlayStation 3 are sketchy, its anticipated cost and the proven cost of the 360 and its games have priced some gamers out of the next-gen market. Even the slight lowering of expected Nintendo games could make a huge difference.

Quality almost always wins over quantity, but in this case if the quality difference isn’t that great and the quantity difference is, Nintendo may do very well for itself when the Revolution launches later this year.
