Ben over at Opposable Thumbs has a great piece lamenting the fact that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion seems to have a grip on a lot of his gaming friends that’s reached the level of creepy.
Ben, you’re not alone and you’re absolutely right. Oblivion seems to have players in all kinds of circles locked in dark rooms, spending their entire weekends leveling up and figuring out the single-player RPG. One by one, they’re disappearing into, well, Oblivion.
Over on EQII we’ve noticed players falling out for Oblivion as well. Our regular raid tank has been bitten by the bug and our secondary tank seems to have “disappeared” over the weekend. Others are mysteriously MIA as well. If this keeps up, we’ll be raiding Black Burrow (the newbie zone) before too much longer. Eep!
When it comes to explaining the addiction, I can’t do it better than Ben.
Everyone is buying it, and everyone is playing for way too long. I feel surrounded by Oblivion, like I'm the weird one for not putting in 48 hours straight this weekend leveling up my thief.
This game is turning you all into pod-people. It's rather scary.
