PS3 Price Unknown, But PS2’s A Steal - 21.4.06

PS3
We may not have a firm price for the upcoming PlayStation 3 release, but gamers willing to settle for a little bit of current-gen action can get a bargain thanks to Sony’s recent move.

On the cusp of next month’s E3 conference, Sony has dropped the suggested retail price of the PlayStation 2 from $149.99 to $129.99. Already sites such as Best Buy have the console listed for the new and improved price.

It’s a given that the PS2 will be deemed “obsolete” once the PS3 hits the scene, but it’s unclear how soon the console will actually be phased out. And with some major titles for the PS2 on the horizon, this is a great deal for those willing to settle for current-gen action.

Coming in a lot cheaper than an Xbox 360 ($399.99 for the cheapest one on Best Buy’s site, which by the way, is out of stock again), the PS2 has titles such as these planned in the next few weeks alone: FIFA World Cup 2006, Rampage: Total Destruction, Atelier Iris 2, Metal Saga, The Da Vinci Code, X-Men: The Official Game and more.

More news on the PS3’s release is expected to come during May’s E3. Until then, and perhaps even longer, official word on pricing and a solid release date for the console will likely remain a hot topic of speculation.
