Playstation 3
Sony’s plans to compete head on with Microsoft’s Xbox Live service are moving forward as the entertainment giant has entered into a deal with the Royal Bank of Scotland to create a system for gathering online payments for the new service.

The system, called the PlayStation Network Platform, will be similar to Xbox Live, but it’s being described as an “iTunes-like distribution network,” by Howard Stringer of Sony. It will let players download games, get additional content and play online with each other. It’s also expected to offer movies and music downloads from its inception. There’s even talk of an auction service for gamers.

Trials on the new system are expected to start in May.

More details about the PS3 and the live service are expected to be released during next month’s E3. How much or how little Sony, known for its tight-lipped stance, will say remains to be seen.
