As gamers in North America begin to breath a collective sigh of relief at the Xbox 360’s newfound availability, fans in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and South Africa are still waiting for some next-gen action. This is about to change.

In an interview with Financial Times, Xbox’s Chris Lewis said plans are under way to get the console into these markets over the next 18 months so it can get a head start on Sony’s PS3. An actual target date for getting sales started wasn't revealed.

Lewis, head of Xbox in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said it was planning to start selling the consoles through local specialist games retailers, as well as through partnerships with multinational groups such as Germany’s Media Markt and DSG International, the electronics retailer whose brands include Dixons and PC World.

The Xbox division will also set up local helplines and a local Xbox Live internet service, allowing gamers to interact with each other and play games online in their own language.

Sony’s PS3 is set to release later this year as is the Nintendo Revolution. Both consoles will make the next-gen game pretty interesting to observe worldwide, but I’m betting on the Revolution as the console to watch. This console is expected to cost less and have more reasonably priced titles than the other two, making it more accessible for gamers the world over.

I’d like to hear what gamers think about the two upcoming releases. Which console interests you the most? Why? Let me know by visiting our forums!
