Activision has scored a major coup with its sealing of a deal to hold exclusive worldwide rights for new titles in the Barbie game franchise. With a track record that comes in at 15 million units sold to date, Barbie games are nothing to sneeze at.
The new deal with Mattel gives Activision a multi-year contract that will cover games based on upcoming Barbie movies such as “The Barbie Diaries” for the PC and GameBoy Advance and “Barbie In The 12 Dancing Princesses” for the PlayStation 2, PC and GameBoy Advance. The deal also includes other distribution rights.
Barbie is one of the most recognized brands in the world and its video games have sold more than 15 million units to date. Activision is excited to partner with Mattel to expand this classic property to a new generation of consumers," said Dave Oxford, General Manager of Activision Publishing, Inc.

This might not be news to gamers who prefer the Master Chief to Barbie’s more feminine ways, but anyone who has seen a 6-year-old girl play a Barbie title knows this deal is a winner for Activision. Hopefully, the upcoming titles will be as well done as games in the past. So far, the Barbie franchise has not only been cute, it’s been challenging for young players, helping them develop reasoning abilities while enjoying a good tale.
