Sony’s David Reeves has said some major PlayStation 3 titles will not make the Nov. 17 launch, adding credence to earlier reports that the next-gen console’s entry to the market will be light.
According to Reeves, “Singstar” will arrive “certainly before Christmas;” an EyeToy game will come out after Christmas; Heavenly Sword, Formula One and Motorstorm will arrive after the holiday; but, Resistance: Fall of Man “will certainly be a launch title.”
Reeves has also been quoted as saying Sony has “built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even (if) it didn't have games."
While that sounds pretty darn arrogant, I don’t doubt he’s right. Maybe not 5 million, but Sony certainly has a big enough following to garner some major sales with lousy launch titles and a promise of better things to come. If they can get the darn thing to work correctly without crashes, lock ups and titles that don’t run, they’ll be ahead of the game compared to Microsoft even if they just launch with a My Little Pony title.
