When Sony Online Entertainment decided it wanted to show its appreciation for men and women serving active duty, it rolled out a contest to show its support. The company has announced five winners in its Field Commander “Serving Gamers Abroad” contest, which gives the lucky recipients some nice gaming packages they can share with the folks back home.
To take part, active military personnel were asked to write a brief essay about their role in the Armed Forces, their gaming habits and how being away from home has impacted their playing. The winners each get a copy of Field Commander and Untold Legends: The Warrior’s Code that they can play across the Internet with their friends and family.
Being stationed overseas, far away from loved ones, is a situation that the majority of us can't even come close to relating to, but can certainly empathize with," said Laura Naviaux, Senior Brand Manager, Sony Online Entertainment. "Knowing that many of those serving overseas in our military are avid gamers, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for them to feel like they were at home playing games with their family and friends."

OK, it might sound a little cheesy to offer up games to those serving abroad, but there are those military personnel who are far away from home that happen to have access to their own computers and an Internet connection. Playing online with friends and family isn’t out of the question in down times and sometimes can really help bridge the miles. Granted, not every soldier who happens to be a gamer could take part, but the idea was a decent token gesture.
