Xbox 360 Leads Google Searches - 30.5.06

Xbox 360
If gamers put their money where their searches are, it looks like the Xbox 360 will win the next-gen console race. Fortunately for Sony and Nintendo, what’s searched the most online and what’s actually bought at the store sometimes ends up being two entirely different things.

A recent check on Google’s search trends, however, reveals the 360 is the most searched console in every region covered. In some regions, like the United States and the UK, the Xbox 360 had more than double the search interest then the closest competition – the PS3.

Unfortunately for Nintendo, both Wii and the former Nintendo Revolution name barely made a bleep on Google’s bar chart in most areas. In locations such as Denmark and France, the searches were barely existent for both Wii and Revolution.

So, what’s all this mean? Well, honestly not much right now, but it will be very interesting to watch and see if search trends relate to sales numbers when the other two next-gen consoles make it to the market later this year.

If Google’s searches did add up to future sales numbers, the 360 would be the king of the consoles, followed by the PS3 and lastly Nintendo’s more affordable offering. Wii might be for everyone, but if searches reflect in sales, it could be in trouble.

In all fairness, however, the Xbox 360 is “real” right now. It’s on the market. It’s something people can see and play. So, this one topping the searches makes perfect sense. The other two consoles aren’t quite players in the game just yet.

And while the PlayStation 3 is still months out from launch, the fact it falls in at No. 2 lends some credibility to the idea that price will not have a huge impact on the console’s sales performance.

As for Nintendo, well, it could be all in the name and its change from the super cool Revolution to the shiny, happy Wii. But then again, neither name seems to be drawing a whole lot of interest. It is interesting to note, though, that Revolution is more widely searched than Wii. Seems like the name's not catching on just yet.

Maybe when launch time draws a little closer, the interest level with rise? Time will tell.
