Xbox Live Heading To PC, Mobile Phones - 10.5.06

Xbox 360
Xbox Live is about to get more users – a lot more users.

Microsoft announced today it intends to expand the service to mobile phones and the Windows Vista operating system. This means gamers will be able to play against those using PCs and phones, making the service “Live Anywhere.”

Bill Gates himself delivered the news at the E3 conference in Los Angeles.

Microsoft is probably the only company that can pull this off," Gates said, alluding to the company's widespread software development efforts. The company said the system will launch with the January debut of Windows Vista.

Gates also told the crowd that the company is confident it will sell 10 million Xbox 360s by the time Sony launches the PlayStation 3 in November. Microsoft had previously declined to project sales beyond the end of June.

This is incredibly cool news for gamers who have been unable to meet up with their friends and play due to platform differences. Let’s face it, not everyone can afford to run out and buy an Xbox 360, Xbox and PC, too. No doubt this will increase the service's popularity in the face of Sony's plans to rival it.
