The big rumor on the gaming front is the potential buy out of Nintendo by Apple. With implications that could send shockwaves through the handheld console world, the rumor is big.
Game Daily took a close look at the rumor and decided to call in DFC Intelligence president David Cole for his expert analyst opinion. Although it’s not out of the realm of possibility the move is something Apple would like, Cole doubts its veracity and seems to think Nintendo would never bite.
From Game Daily:
That does sound pretty crazy," remarked Cole, referring to the rumor. … "You would think if they were looking to sell it would be more if the Wii came out and was a huge flop; then maybe you'd start talking more about those types of rumors, but clearly it's very speculative.
Cole didn't deny that Apple could be interested in Nintendo, however. It's just not likely that Nintendo would agree. "[Apple] could start reaching out to see if Nintendo is interested, and then they say no. That would probably be the most likely scenario that I would see," he said. "You know, companies are always talking with each other... which can lead to rumors and speculation. It just goes on all the time. The chance of something actually getting finalized is a totally different ballgame."
The rumors began flying following another Apple-related piece of speculation that involves the company deciding to get into gaming. It’s been rumored that LucasArts’ former tech director Mike Lampbell has been appointed to lead the new Apple games project.
Apple entering the game market isn't a big shocker. (Even Cole agrees.) The iPod right now is pretty darn impressive and does offer some game play possibilities, but imagine a line of high quality games actually developed for the portable wonder. It just might make the iPod more unstoppable than it already is. This, of course, doesn't take the Mac Mini into account either.
