What this will mean for the Blu-ray loaded PS3 when it arrives on the scene later this year is anyone’s guess, but Movie Web is reporting the launch of the Blu-ray player last week was anything but eventful.
From Movie Web:
Last Tuesday, the first seven titles, all from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, went on sale at select consumer electronics stores. The first player, from Samsung, was scheduled to go on sale five days later, but reports indicate that few retailers kept the machines in the backroom and away from the trickle of consumers willing to shell out $999 -- twice the cost of the entry-level HD-DVD player, from Toshiba -- to buy one now that the software was available.
Could it be those interested in Blu-ray are waiting to get a little more bang for their buck when the PlayStation 3 comes out? Or is the that people don’t want to give up their old gen DVD players just yet for an expensive machine that only has a few titles designed for it as of yet?
If resistance to the technology continues, Sony might have to change its marketing tactics and go back to saying the PS3 is a gaming console rather than a super computer/HD-DVD player to get an edge on the Xbox 360 and Wii. Regardless, the competition is sure to be fierce when all three next-gen consoles are on the market later this year.
