PS3 Can Replace A PC? - 3.6.06

PS3
Sony’s Phil Harrison is so jazzed about the PS3’s capabilities, he’s asserting that gamers will be able to toss out their PCs in favor of the console that can do everything but wash your windows. Give it time though and Sony officials might just find a way to make that happen.

At least this is what Sony wants potential buyers to believe about the console. And, give Sony its due, this machine is definitely more than just a “toy.” The console will offer a computer processing platform, storage, wired and wireless networking, a media reader, Linux-based operating system, USB ports and more.

But, replace a PC?

According to Harrison, it can.

From Daily Tech:

We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions. The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC," said Harrison.

The statement is not all that surprising as Sony finds itself in need of justifying its console’s price to gamers in order to compete with Wii and the 360. Sony’s even announced the decision to add motion-sensing technology to the PS3’s controller, like the Wii. It, of course, denies the move is a reaction to Wii’s use of the gadgetry.

Will the PS3 replace the PC? Probably not. Could it in some homes? Absolutely.

The machine really does pack a big punch for the money, and now it’s up to Sony to convince buyers they’ll not only be getting a great gaming machine, but also a web browser, Blu-ray technology, storage and more, making it a bargain for the price.
