Despite earlier reports, Sony intends to make both versions of the PS3 available in the UK. Whether this happens at launch or not remains to be seen, but UK gamers can count on having both the 20Gb and 60Gb versions available at some point.
That word comes from Sony Entertainment’s David Wilson via Pocket Lint. During a recent interview, Wilson said Sony is in “a period of open consultation with retail and consumers to decide on the best way to approach the impending launches of both skus [models]."
There has been some buzz about that indicated Sony only intended to retail the 60Gb, or the more expensive, version of the PS3 in the UK. The launch for the console is set for Nov. 17. It remains unclear whether the 20Gb will be available right at launch and even Wilson was unsure of this.
The PS3’s launch will come roughly at the time of the Wii’s, making the holiday season as busy in the UK as it will be in North America.
News that both versions of the PS3 will eventually be available to UK gamers is good. If there’s one thing I’ve learned while writing for this site it’s that folks in Europe tend to get the shaft on releases for both video games and television. Not making the more affordable version available would have been just plain wrong and could have cut Sony out on some buying action. This, of course, wouldn’t be wise since Sony faces some stiff competition in the console market in the UK and elsewhere with the exception of maybe Japan.
