Gamers will have to wait a little longer than expected to check out the title that won GameSpot’s Best MMORPG of E3 2006. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures has been delayed until sometime in or after March 2007. The good news, however, is that Conan will make his way to a console, too, presumably the Xbox 360.
The game, under development by Norway’s Funcom, will be published and distributed by British publisher Edios. Funcom, the company responsible for Anarchy Online, will provide the server operation and in-game support.
The game's in beta testing right now and screenshots for it look fantastic. The title itself sounds pretty fascinating, allowing gamers to personalize their characters through a 20-hour single player game before they are turned loose to explore and adventure in the online, multiplayer world.
This little feature could deliver some advantages for the online game’s popularity by making it different from others on the market. By forcing players to personalize their experience and really get to know their characters before they strike out for adventure, the title will not only stands the chance of really getting players addicted by that 20-hour mark, but it also tracks well with the Conan storyline. Before the barbarian began adventuring the world, collecting a band of friends, he had to endure personal trials and character building exercises, as well.
The 20 hours will have to be exciting to work, but if it is, it could also enhance the role play aspect of the game, something many MMORPGs are lacking in. Although, this is generally only through the fault of players, not the games themselves.
Conan is a title I’ll be keeping my eyes out for.
