UMDs might be a little hard to find for that PlayStation Portable, but they’re not the only alternative for PSP viewing. There’s now a site dedicated to free downloads for the Sony handheld and it looks like it's being developed to do more.
PSP Connect offers a variety of downloads from mini-episodes of television-type programs to game and movie trailers. In addition, the site has a How-To section, pod casts and educational downloads, as well.
With the seeming death of the UMD format on the horizon despite Sony’s commitment to the technology, PSP Connect looks like it could be a great option for PSP owners to still get new video content added to their machines. It’s not quite like getting a ton of new movies, but this alternative has some potential that's not lost on Sony.
One perk on the site is the inclusion of a Showtime channel. Right now all that’s offered are highlights of “Sleeper Cell” and “Huff” but the potential for more is there.
If the site is properly developed with a mix of free and pay-per-view offerings, it could rival iTunes. This, of course, would not only give gamers a great option for their PSPs, but also give portable TV and movie viewers an alternative beyond the iPod.
