Rumors of Denzel Washington starring as the Master Chief himself in the Halo movie are starting to fly around the Internet.
And with multiple delays and what seems like a very long time in between any news of consequence, it's little wonder speculation is running high. Some fans are even wondering if the Halo movie has died before it even really got started.
Now listed with a 2008 release on IMDb, the movie does seem to be stalled, if not dead. But the folks at Cinema Blend seem to be taking a different spin on the news or lack thereof.
The site has a great timeline of the things that have happened surrounding the movie that isn’t. The movie, if and when it gets off the ground, will feature the Master Chief and his alien-fighting antics.
The folks at Cinema Blend seem to think the movie is merely moving forward slowly. The writer points out that Bungie’s Joseph Stanten spoke as recently as April 22 about the film and its script, letting the cat out of the bag the flick would focus on the Halo novels, rather than the game.
Back in October 2005, not all that terribly long ago in the grand scheme of things, Bungie made a big deal on its site about the planned movie and “The Peter Jackson’s” involvement.
It’s hard to believe things would have changed so much from October 2005 until now. Halo is a huge franchise for Bungie. Microsoft’s Xbox was made by the game. Canning the movie doesn’t seem like a move they’d make.
As the writer at Cinema Blend says, “It’s not dead, Microsoft and Bungie simply aren’t in any rush to get it done.” That makes the most sense.
Rushing a half-baked Halo movie to the theaters wouldn’t do the franchise justice. Considering the stand the folks at Valve are taking about a Half-Life movie, Bungie taking its time makes even more sense.
So, I guess we’re all going to have to wait to see the Chief on the big screen. Whether it's Denzel in the lead role or not, this one's sure to be a hot topic. And, just a side note on that: IMDb does not have Washington cast in the role as of yet.
