It’s a movie. It’s a game (or several of them). It even has its own cute little toys and parody flicks. It’s “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and when it comes to bad rides turned into great franchises, this one takes the cake.
And while the Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley movie takes the box office by storm this weekend, it seems there’s some serious pirate action to take home, too. There are two video games out and one on the way.
The Disney franchise on the gaming end is so hot, in fact, there seems to be a shortage of the titles in some locations. Not surprising considering the popularity of the movie, but it’s still pretty amazing considering the fact this entire franchise was inspired by a ride at Disney!
Right now, there’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Legend of Jack Sparrow for the PlayStation 2 and the PC, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest for the Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance and the PSP. It appears as if EB Games is having a little trouble keeping these titles in stock, so be warned they might be hard to find.
Still to come is Pirates of the Caribbean Online. It’s still under development, but is looking pretty darn good. In it, players will get to make their own pirates and quest for treasure and adventure while making their names legendary. This title’s not due out until 2007.
In the meantime, the two games recently released and the movie should keep folks busy, not to mention the parodies, toys and on and on.
It’s hard to believe this all started with a lousy ride, isn’t it?
