Valve Software
The folks over at Valve must enjoy watching gamers bang their heads into walls, throw controllers and cry out loud at their computers. The trailer for Portal is out, and it looks painfully intense.

Portal is one of the two games that will come along with the Half-Life 2: Episode Two for PC gamers, Xbox 360 owners and even those who buy the soon-to-launch PlayStation 3. Also included in the deal is Team Fortress 2, which gives a new spin on the old multi-player title. Team Fortress looks like a blast, too, based on the trailer. A little campy, but fun nonetheless. The package deal is looking like a sound buy for serious gamers and the Portal trailer makes it even more enticing.

Visually explaining why Portal is hard to describe, the trailer shows a fast-paced game that’s a cross between a first-person shooter and Tetris. Valve describes the title as one that will change “how players approach, manipulate, and surmise the possibilities in a given environment in a manner similar to how the Gravity Gun changed our approach to how an object may be leveraged in any given situation.”

Based on the visuals, that description about sums it up.

I’m not generally a fan of first-person shooters, but I seem to have developed a recent addiction to F.E.A.R. and I have to admit, Portal’s looking enticing, as well. The bonus with Portal is it doesn’t look like I’ll be afraid to play with the lights off.

I might need to have a back up controller ready, but I think Portal’s a game I’ll be checking out.
