PS3 Launch Could Mirror The Xbox 360's - 5.7.06

PS3
Think back to last holiday season when Xbox 360s were selling on eBay for $10,000 a pop and you’ll get an idea of what one industry analyst thinks will happen with the PlayStation 3 launch.

This time, though, the analyst, P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research, thinks the issues will simply be because of the console’s complexity – not necessarily a shortage of parts.

According to Business Week, McNealy doesn’t think Sony will get production figures where it would like until sometime in 2007. "This is now the most complex box that’s ever been built in this industry. It’s going to have a Cell processor, it’s going to have a Blu-ray drive. The number of pieces that are going into this box are even more astounding [than the over 1,700 parts used in the Xbox 360]."

He also questions, like other analysts have, whether consumers will be willing to pay the high price the PS3 commands.

Sony’s target is to ship 1 million consoles a month. The company intends to have squeezed 6 million units out by the end of March 2007. Supposedly, two million boxes will be ready to go for the Nov. 17 launch. An article in Pro-G has the UK alone getting 150,000 of the two million consoles.

But it seems as if McNealy expects Xbox 360 release part two this November. As for the Wii, he doesn’t seem to think that console will face such a bumpy launch since it’s much less complex than both the PS3 and the 360.

If I were a betting person, I’d put my money on the PS3 launch going as badly or worse than the Xbox 306’s, but then again Sony is pretty amazing when it comes to getting things out of the door when it wants to.
