PS3 Titles Could Cost Gamers More - 3.7.06

Sony’s Kaz Hirai didn’t come out and give an actual price, but in a recent interview, he did hint at prices that might be more than many gamers expect (or can even afford).

According to Tech Whack, Hirai defined what the market expects for game prices as a range of $39 to $59 USD. “If it becomes a bit higher than US$ 59, don’t ding me, but, again, I don’t expect it to be US $100.”

On the upside, it looks like those who intend to buy a PS3 won’t have to pay $100 a title, but it sure does look feasible the games will cost more than the already pricey Xbox 360 games. This coupled with the price of the PS3 console in general could put a hurting on Sony’s sales expectations.

Analysts are already saying it is more than possible Sony will lose the next-gen race. If the price of games is too high, this speculation could pan out with Sony pricing itself out of the market. However, if Sony titles that take full advantage of the PS3’s power are awesome and they can reel gamers in for more than a day or two of play, the price won’t likely matter much.

The key for Sony here will be quality and draw. If solid titles that wow gamers are made; they will come. If the games are half-baked and only draw the die-hard Sony fans, the PS3 (I predict) will be in trouble. Getting the attention of the undecided buyers is key.

For those who can’t afford the financial plunge Sony will require, Microsoft and Nintendo are lining up to make their consoles stand out. Wii’s gamer friendly set up and more affordable prices will no doubt appeal to many. Microsoft’s gearing up to play some serious hardball, too, with its Forza and Halo 3 releases and potential price drop a possibility.

My guess is those who are inclined to buy a Microsoft product will do so; Sony lovers will save up for the PS3 and those who love Nintendo will go gaga for Wii. The winner in the console battle will be the one that gets the rest of the market. Pricing will be a big issue and right now it’s just not looking good for Sony, but only time will tell for sure.
