Wii Will Know No Boundaries? - 28.7.06

Nintendo Wii
As the clock ticks down to an anticipated release of the other two next-gen consoles, Nintendo’s secrecy is starting to fuel the rumor mill. The topics for discussion have involved the actual release date, a hard price, a LucasArts’ lightsaber and now region free games.

Many are thinking Wii will know no boundaries, like its sisters (or brothers) in the handheld arena. The idea was sparked by comments from Nintendo’s VP of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Perrin Kaplan. "Clearly, the success of Nintendo DS has offered a lot of lessons about what works in the marketplace - and we certainly intend to keep our fans satisfied. For the Wii system, we are finalizing all the relevant details and will be making announcements in the coming months ... We will share a lot of ways people can play globally, regionally, without boundaries.”

The problem with jumping on Kaplan’s comments is the fact it’s not clear whether the “without boundaries” is referencing the Wi-Fi capabilities or the software itself. Gamers would obviously enjoy the software being global as it would allow for more instant access in all regions when titles are released. This, however, would likely be thwarted by the trend toward regional specific titles.

After all, what would happen to the game-banning movement if software were global?

More specifics on Wii’s launch are expected to come later this summer, or in early fall. The latest buzz has the machine hitting the streets in early October. Nintendo, however, hasn’t issued an official statement on the go date. Whatever it shapes up to be, Wii will no doubt make a splash this holiday season with its anticipated affordability and ease of use.
