WoW Beats Jesus, George Bush On Searches - 11.7.06

World of Warcraft searches
With a subscription base that’s more than 6 million worldwide, there’s no denying the unbelievable popularity of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft. The game’s such a hit, in fact, it beats out some very surprising things when it’s entered into a Google Trends search.

This whole thing came about not too long ago when I wrote a piece about Blizzard and mentioned that its World of Warcraft title had more subscribers than the populations of some small countries. This got me to thinking about just how popular this title is. I wondered if I could manage to find something that might be deemed more popular than this game that’s taken the MMORPG world by storm, beating out all comers hands down.

So, here are the results of my non-scientific study.

To be fair in my search, I used World of Warcraft rather than WoW to try and eliminate any question that the Google searches were for the game. The searches were set to all regions with a 2006 only parameter. The graphs used for this piece were the bottom regional ones. Just a note on the graphic, too, World of Warcraft is represented by the blue line, George Bush in red and Jesus in orange.

So, here’s how WoW stacked up against some other searches. World of Warcraft is more popular than:

  • George Bush, World of Warcraft wins out in all regions, link
  • Jesus, in all regions except the United States where Jesus wins by a nose, link
  • God, even the big guy loses to WoW in all regions but Australia, the United States, Canada and New Zealand, link
  • EverQuest, it doesn’t even stand a chance, link
  • Xbox 360, in all regions but New Zealand, link
  • PS3, link
  • Wii, link
  • Jessica Simpson, link
  • Paris Hilton, although she actually gives WoW a run for its money in most regions, link
  • Halo, WoW wins hands down in all regions except the U.S. where it wins by a hair, link
  • Oblivion, this one actually beats it out in New Zealand, Germany and Finland, link
  • World Cup, loses in all regions but Australia, Canada and New Zealand, link
  • Pokemon loses in all regions except Australia and New Zealand, link

Now, here are some searches where WoW lost hands down. OK, I tried to find some things that might beat out World of Warcraft, but it seems the game’s more popular than ice cream, apple pie, the Beatles and even chocolate. Sex, it seems, is the only thing that beat out WoW on the search trends.

Go figure!

I’m not even sure what this says about us and our Google searching habits!
