Rockstar Games' has taken a whole lot of criticism over its recent game releases. With the Hot Coffee scandal still brewing and a pack of politicians and activists ready to pull out pitchforks and torches and storm the company’s offices, it appears Rockstar is ready to Bully back.
The company has announced it will release its already controversial title, Bully, this October for the PS2.
In all fairness, it appears as if Rockstar maybe stirred up the Hot Coffee pot just a bit, but the hype over Bully seems a bit much. The Miami-Dade County School Board has asked retailers not to sell the game and others, plenty of others, fear the title will turn America’s teens into baseball bat wielding nut jobs.
In the game, players will take on the persona of Jimmy Hopkins, a student at fictional Bullworth Academy. Players will have to defend themselves against bullies and will have weapons, such as bats, stink bombs and marbles at their disposal.
Rockstar’s Rodney Walker has been quoted as saying “Finally 'Bully' can speak for itself. People can look at the game and see what it is and what it's not."
While the title might sound a little tasteless, it also sounds like a great way to blow off some steam. I’d rather see kids frustrated with their environment take it out on a game than on each other. Lord knows we all need to blow off a little steam now and again. And, frankly, who hasn’t wanted to stink bomb a bully at school?
Will the title turn our teens into nut jobs? Nope.
Video games don’t cause violence, people do.
