The unusual online world of Second Life is about to get a blast from the past. The 1980’s pop culture legends, Duran Duran, have agreed to perform a live concert on the site in the near future.
Band members Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and John, Roger and Andy Taylor will appear in the online world as custom-designed avatars.
Rhodes has been quoted as saying "Whatever you can imagine is now possible ... Second Life is the future right now, offering endless possibilities for artists."
Second Life is an online world that’s shaped by its players. It looks pretty intense and even involves the buying and selling of goods in hard, actual cash dollars with the blessing of developers. The quirky online world has more than 300,000 followers.
Duran Duran’s performance is said to be the first involving a full band in Second Life. Solo artist Suzanne Vega has also signed on to perform live in the game.
Kind of an unusual hook, but honestly no more wacky than online weddings or drinking parties in games like EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft.
Personally, I’m not one to enjoy standing around for such things while in a virtual world, but Duran Duran might just pull one heck of a crowd. With hits like “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “Rio,” the 80's fans are likely to be coming out of the woodwork.
Here’s hoping they don’t wear the shiny leather.
