Japanese Nintendo DS owners can now enjoy a little Opera with their gaming. Nintendo has officially rolled out its new DS Browser in Japan using online sales sites.

The browser boasts full Opera capabilities that allow gamers to check out all their favorite sites while using the Nintendo DS or even the DS Lite. The browser comes as its own card, just like the games do, and also offers an extra memory expansion cartridge so DS users can enjoy complete content while using WiFi.

The move's a little behind the times, but it seems like the system is pretty solid.

Features of the new browswer, which is only available in Japan at the moment, include:
  • Browsing: The system has two different display mode options for browsing. A fit-to-width mode has Opera using both screens for scrolling up and down a path. DS mode, puts the Web page on the lower screen while a pink thumbnail can be moved around on the page. What’s magnified will show up on the upper screen.
  • Navigation: The DS pen is the main navigation tool that allows users to click links, scroll and write.
  • Standards: The DS browser almost mirrors Opera 8.5, allowing users to access the same sites and Web-based applications.
  • Visuals: The browser supports typical Web graphics, such as JPG, GIF and PNG.
  • Bookmarks: The system will allow these.
  • Parental control: Opera is pretty serious about this, and inasmuch, there are controls on the DS version. Passwords can be set and there’s even some filter settings, too.

There’s no word on when this will roll out in Europe or the U.S., but from the sounds of it, the Nintendo DS browser will be a sure fire hit.
