PS2 Data Will Transfer To PS3 - 8.8.06

PS3
Taking backwards compatibility to the next level, Sony has announced it will release a memory card adaptor that will enable stored information from the PS2 to be transferred to the PS3 upon its release.

The adaptor will let gamers transfer the saved game information to a virtual memory card that will be on the PS3. This in a nutshell means that game information stored on the old machine won’t be lost on the new one. If, for example, a gamer’s made it to an uber level on a particular title, starting over doesn’t have to be the only option to play on the PS3. As long as the title’s backwards compatible, it’s game on.

Information about the adaptor and other PS3 features is available on the PS3 site.

The move is more than brilliant on Sony’s part. If the company does a good job on its backward compatibility, it could make the Xbox 360 look pretty bad. Microsoft’s been having some issues with the backwards stuff, although that’s not the least of the company’s worries as the other next-gen consoles make their way to the market.

Right now, Microsoft’s facing a growing campaign from buyers who want to see the 360’s warranty extended to better cover defects that have been found in the console. Plus, there are still some off and on issues with the compatibility.

On the up side for Microsoft, there’s lots of buzz about the awesome packages that are being rolled out, and Gears of War being released long about the time the PS3 hits the scene won’t hurt either.
