With the launch of Sony’s PlayStation 3 just under three months away, one might think factories would be churning out parts for the super gaming console.
Not so says Sony Computer Entertainment American’s president Kaz Hirai in an interview with GameSpot. According to Hirai, review of the production lines is under way and they are preparing, but nothing’s started just yet. “We've not announced and we haven't set really a specific date to say, ‘As of this day we're going to start manufacturing.’”
Shortages, it seems, could be a strong possibility for the PS3, just like the Xbox 360, which faced not only shortages by holiday-time battles for 360s on eBay. “I think it's going to be very much of a challenge to be able to meet every single unit demand that's out there in the market,” Hirai said. “That's just a logistical impossibility.”
Hirai’s comments ring true, but another holiday season filled with empty store shelves, long lines and inflated video game prices on auction sites isn’t sounding like too much fun.
And, if that weren’t enough, news on the launch title front doesn’t seem much better. When questioned about it, Hirai had a lot to say, but it all kind of boils down to this comment: “I think it's too early to say at this point in time which games definitively are going to be launch titles, and I certainly can't speak for the third parties.”
A lot of the third parties have spoken already and many don’t have a lot cooking for the PS3 at the moment. F.E.A.R., however, has been confirmed, which is good news for Sony.
With the clock ticking down to the Nov. 17 launch date, one would think Sony would have a lot more to say or at least a lot more decided. With the Xbox 360 fiasco of last year, I was expecting Sony to have learned from Microsoft’s lesson, but it’s sure sounding like holiday season 2006 will be a whole lot like 2005.
No wonder folks are opting for 360s right now.
