Sony’s tight-lipped stance about the PlayStation 3’s full specifications is going to cost the company titles from Atari at least until sometime in 2007. SNK Playmore has echoed the sentiment.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Bruno Bonnell, Atari’s CEO, said his company has no intention of releasing PS3 titles earlier than 2007. The company will, however, have games for the Xbox 360 and Wii this season.
Bonnell’s been quoted as saying, “It's just that we're lacking information about the PS3 at this stage, because we have basically a rough release date and a high retail price point.”
That statement sounds more than dangerous for Sony as the anticipated launch of the PS3 draws ever closer. Does this mean that other software publishers are still lacking information about the console?
If that’s the case, it’s likely Sony will launch with titles that don’t fully take advantage of the PS3’s power as earlier reported. This could cause it some issues when going head-to-head with the much more affordable Wii and the Halo-running 360.
Bonnell did go on to say he didn’t think the console’s price spelled disaster for Sony. Rather, “Sony has chosen to really differentiate itself from the other consoles.”
Sony does have Blu-ray and the PS3 is being touted more as an overall entertainment machine rather than just a game console, but the fact of the matter is the game selection could be quite weak at the start. This might not bode well for holiday sales, but if Sony really pushes the Blu-ray edge, who knows, it might not hurt too much.
My money’s going on the Wii if another console’s brought into my house, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a space for the PS3 down the road. The titles will have to be there first though, Atari and all.
