There’s a report out that indicates Nintendo’s Wii might be even cheaper than expected – a whole lot cheaper.
According to Revolution Portal, Nikko Citigroup’s report says the Wii will retail for about $170.
This, of course, is not the official word from Nintendo; the company is waiting until September to give out firm information on a release date and actual price. The Citigroup report says the console is costing less to make than Nintendo had expected.
Earlier speculation had the Wii coming in around $200 with release dates bouncing all over the place. The latest guess on a release is early October, based on some unusual media releases issued by Nintendo itself.
Whether Wii will price out at $170, $200 or somewhere in between or even above will have to wait until Nintendo gives its final word, but there’s no doubt this will be the cheapest of the next-gen trio.
With cheaper games, a free online gaming service (per Reggie Fil-Aime) and some serious excitement about the console cooking, Wii could be the dark horse that wins the next-gen race.
Don’t call me a Nintendo fan-girl, but I really have to admit this console’s really caught my attention (much to my own surprise). The price is right; game developers are interested; and Nintendo has give the impression it has no intention of trying to bleed the public dry like some of its competitors.
I’ll be waiting for official word and you can bet my checkbook will be lighter whenever the release is.
