Nearly two years since its launch, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft continues to pull in new players all the time.
Those with any doubts about the game’s seemingly mesmerizing effect on players can check out the NPD Group’s list of Top 10 selling PC games for July 23-29. WoW sits at No. 3, but that’s an amazing feat for a game that’s anything but new.
The wildly popular MMORPG seems to gain two new players for every one it loses. My server on EverQuest II gets lots of WoW converts, but we’ve lost our share of folks to the title, as well.
With an expansion in the works, diligence on banning gamers who break the rules and server problems seemingly behind it, WoW is a title that shows no signs of slowing down. Whether nearly half of its players have an actual addiction problem or not is a matter for another debate. And, it's likely one I'll take up sometime soon, but my initial stand is it sounds like a bunch of bull to me.
On an aside, the NPD Group’s listing is more than interesting with kids’ titles sprinkled throughout. Cars by THQ is the No. 1 game for that week and Nancy Drew, of all games, is in at No. 5, above Sims 2 Family Fun Stuff. Also of note is Guild Wars taking up the No. 9 spot.
