If the latest pricing news for PS3 titles is correct, Sony might be in for a costly next-gen battle.Kotaku is reporting that Armored Core 4 will debut on Dec. 14 for the whopping price of $70. Sonic the Hedgehog will retail for about $60, which is in line with Xbox 360 pricing.
The $70 title price, if it pans out as such, could be too high for a lot of potential gamers and might turn the waters even cooler for Sony as the PlayStation 3’s launch window arrives. Already the company has had to scale back production, eliminate the planned European launch and admits to issues with its Blu-ray diode.
Even still, Sony’s remaining confident sounding. Ken Kutaragi has been quoted as saying “we don’t care” in regards to speculation Wii and the 360 could lead sales. And, Sony’s even standing by reports that it will ship 6 million PS3s by March 2007.
As I’ve said before, I’m sure the PS3 will be one heck of a console, but I can’t imagine why Kutaragi would continue to sound so arrogantly confident unless it's strictly to boost investor confidence, too.
The fact of the matter is the machine is going to be expensive, unless you’re in Japan, and the titles for next-gen games are already too high for many potential buyers. Letting them climb even higher just can’t be a good thing.
Nintendo’s on the right track to capture gaming fans who can’t afford Sony’s costly package. The 360’s still a bit high in price for some, but Microsoft’s been doing some price lowering of its own.
Whether Sony can actually pull this off or not remains to be seen. I’m thinking Sony might just be Sony’s biggest enemy in this battle.
